Mark Johnson Teaches Clawgrass™ Banjo - DVD

$29.95 $22.95

Mark's unique style doesn't really fit into a strict category. It's very bluegrass but has overtones of traditional folk, progressive acoustic, new-grass and old-timey all mixed into one. It's authentic. It's unique. It's Clawgrass. Mark Johnson has redefined banjo picking. His trademark technique, which he calls Clawgrass, combines the percussive, foot-tapping rhythm of old-time clawhammer with the complex, driving rolls of Scruggs style. The music he elicits from his Deering banjo delights traditional frailers and bluegrass pickers alike, and learning his style will add new dimensions to your playing. Mark starts you off with the foundations of clawhammer style and a basic frailing version of Old Joe Clark. He then leads you, step by step, into his clawgrass style with great tunes using two and three finger rolls, drop-thumb noting, slides, double stops, melodic runs, harmonic variations and a variety of tunings.

With his longtime musical partner Emory Lester on guitar, Mark performs and then teaches - seven tunes that demonstrate the intricacies and power of Clawgrass™ banjo: Cherokee Shuffle, Cold Frosty Morning, Angeline the Baker, Heartbroken, John Wilkes Booth and Mosby's Rangers. Each tune you learn introduces different ideas and techniques that will bring your playing to new dimensions. As Mark says, It s like being set free.

Early Irish-American Banjo Book/CD Set

$18.99 $14.99

Here is the Lost Heritage of the Irish-American Banjo! The Irish-style Tenor banjo has become immensely popular of late, yet the roots of Irish influence on American banjo music extends right back to the 1840s, when the legendary Joel Sweeney picked up a gourd banjo from Black American banjo players, and proceeded to perform 'jigs, reels and breakdowns'. Other Irish-Americans played a leading role in the development and popularity of the banjo in America, and Rob MacKillop has collected 27 of their finest pieces in this collection, the first of its kind. TAB for 5-string banjo as well as Tenor Banjo. The Tenor Banjo arrangements are in two tunings: GDAE and CGDA. Can be played with either a flat pick or fingerstyle. The CD recording contains brilliant performances of all 27 pieces by Rob MacKillop, a leading performer of historical banjo music. Rob performs fingerstyle, with the flesh of his fingertips on gut strings, on a period-appropriate banjo, in the old American tuning. This CD is a treasure in itself. Tunes included: St Patrick's Day; Rocky Road To Dublin; Savourneen Deelish; McCormick Party Reel, Sheridan's Hornpipe, Connaught Man's Rambles, and many others.

Harvey Reid - Artistry Of the 6-String Banjo

$17.00

For those who believe that the banjo is an instrument for bluegrass and bluegrass alone, think again. Harvey Reid's The Artistry of the 6-String Banjo concentrates on the rare six-string banjo, recording an eclectic collection of blues, ragtime, and even classical music. Scott Joplin's overly familiar "The Entertainer" is given a fresh reworking by Reid's bright banjo playing, while Bach's "Minuet in G" is delivered with a light and delicate air. He has said that good instrumentalists make their complicated fingerpicking seem easy, and he accomplishes just that. Several of these pieces come from earlier albums on which he used the six-string banjo, including the pirate-tinged "Pieces of Eight" and an old-time version of "The Cuckoo." The rocking — yes rocking — "Six-Shooter Stomp" has potentially created a new genre of boogie-woogie banjo, and one shouldn't miss the flamenco flavored "Andelusia Revisited." While Reid doesn't play guitar on this album, fans of his guitar work will enjoy flatpicker Dan Crary's guest spot on "Bill Baily." There's also one more bonus for banjo lovers: in case six-strings weren't enough, Reid has recorded two instrumentals, "The Gaoler's Jig" and "Sitting on Top of the World," using the 12-string banjo. Nearly half of these instrumentals were written by Reid, and they fit snugly beside the traditional material. One thing that makes him such a fascinating artist is his willingness to build an entire album around a theme, or in this instance, an instrument. The Artistry of the 6-String Banjo should fascinate banjo players and offer something bright and shiny to Reid fans. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr., Rovi
