DEERING CROSSFIRE "BANJO OF 21ST CENTURY"

Deering Banjo Company's Crossfire model has been chosen to represent the "modern banjo" in a unique banjo exhibition at the Museum of Our National Heritage in Lexington, MA, December 1 through August 25, 2002. Described as a "unique reflection of American culture" the exhibit is titled "The Banjo: The People and the Sounds of America's Folk Instrument." Deering's Brazilian rosewood. gold, engraved Gabriella model is also on display. Bela Fleck, the Dixie Chicks, and Kermit the Frog (better known as Steve Bargonetti) -- all Deering banjo endorsing artists --- are featured as artists who keep America's instrument prominent in today contemporary music scene.
A upcoming addition to the presentation will be a "hands on" portion which will feature the pot assemblies for the Deering Goodtime Openback and Goodtime Special Resonator banjo with a steel tone ring. These were chosen to give museum attendees the opportunity to "strum" representative types of banjos (openback and tone ring resonator styles) that they were able to view in the historic collection of banjos from the 18th through the 20th century.
Reflected in the literature from the museum is the thought that as the "musical heritage of different cultures has merged to form an "American" sound, the banjo has been an integral part of popular music in this country for more than 300 years." The exhibit "will explore how the instrument was played in very different ways, ranging from minstrel shows to classical recitals."
