Ivanhoe and G.D.L.- Greg Deering Limited

The Ivanhoe

Hear a Sample One of our most desirable and exquisite banjos, the Ivanhoe is a signature model built in The Custom Shop on special order. If you want a banjo that is as beautiful as it sounds, you will cherish having an Ivanhoe. We reserve the most highly figured walnut for the neck and the most rare pieces of exotic burl walnut veneer for the resonator. The beautiful veneer on the resonator is the same veneer as used on the inside of a Rolls Royce.

We do something very special with the inlays by setting abalone shell into mother-of-pearl and then inlaying them both flawlessly into the ebony fingerboard. Shell inlaid into shell is a rare skill that we have mastered. The abalone adds a colorful sparkle of blue, green, and red to the white mother-of-pearl inlays. Also, along the edges of the neck and resonator the ivoroid binding is dressed up with multi-colored trim of hand-set abalone shell. The neck is fully adjustable, as are all Deering necks, with our two-way adjustable truss-rod.

The Ivanhoe features our three-ply hard rock maple rim trimmed with ivoroid binding, our zinc flange, and our sand-cast virgin bell bronze tone-ring giving it the finest sound possible.

You'll find superb craftsmanship in every aspect of the Ivanhoe. From the triple bound peghead to the hand-carved heel and the superbly engraved gold plated metal parts. (See The Custom Shop) The intricate pierced armrest accented with elegant floral engraving as shown on the cover of the 1994 catalog is only available on the Ivanhoe. It is a work of art that will be treasured for generations to come. With the exceptional tone quality and feel of the neck it's more than just a show piece, it's a banjo player's dream.

G.D.L. (Greg Deering Limited)

Hear a Sample Exquisite craftsmanship and functional elegance are combined to create the G.D.L. banjo. As on the Ivanhoe, patience and care go into cutting the many strips of multicolored abalone shell which are inlaid beside the ivoroid binding, trimming the figured walnut neck and burl walnut resonator. Intricate abalone and mother-of-pearl inlays adorn the ebony fingerboard and peghead. As on the Ivanhoe, the peghead is bound with white/black/white stripes on the face and side, we call this triple bound.

The G.D.L. features the same tone-ring and flange construction as the Ivanhoe, however all metal parts are nickel plated. One popular option of the exotic maple neck and burl maple resonator with either a blond or a cremona sunburst finish.

The G.D.L. draws admiration for its vibrant beauty as well as the superior sound quality. It's an investment you'll be glad you made every time you play it.

* Deering was the first to use a zinc flange, to re-create the sound that was once only available from pre-war banjos. The zinc flange is a feature on all models from the Sierra to the top of the line.

Superior Playability-The beauty of a banjo can be admired but the real test is how well it plays.

"My comparison shopping paid off in buying the G.D.L. I compared it with nearly everything else---including several "vintage" instruments. The G.D.L. tops the works in terms of sound, action, and craftsmanship. In my opinion, your entire line is the best value going for anyone considering buying a banjo."
