The “Bright Star” Broadway play is derived from a real event in 1904 involving an abandoned baby thrown from a train and apparently found near a river in Missouri. Those of you who have heard the 2013 Martin/Brickell CD “Love has Come for You” will immediately recognize the theme taken from the song “When you get to Asheville.” Set in the 1920-1940 era of the Blue Ridge Mountain community of Asheville, NC, Martin’s tale revolves around the lives of Alice Murphy and Billy Cane, whose writing ambitions cause their paths to cross. Reviewers have labelled the collaborative play as the kind of “emotional sweep and folksy wit we associate with Golden Age musicals from Rodgers and Hammerstein.”
