The 24 Fret John Hartford model – a new sound in a full bodied banjo that gives you two full scales up the fingerboard. This Hartford has a big round tone that is full bodied with great bass and sweet highs. With the -06- tone ring and 24 frets it has a more distinct bell like ring to it, with the Grenadillo tone ring it has a more woody ringing tone.

Both choices of tone ring give that distinct round and fruity John Hartford style of sound.

A: It is standard tuning...you just get two full octaves with 24 frets. :-)

Q: A friend of mine is looking to sell his John Hartford Custom Model, #0519299-7613. Can you give me, or direct me to, anymore info that may put this beautiful instrument into the hands of a deserving (& qualified) soul...date of manufacture, retail price at that time etc.
Thank you so much, I have many of John's recordings and the "aw shucks" pleasure of experiencing his heartfelt performances on several occasions...thanks for honoring this true "american master" with such a wonderful tribute.

A: That is a 1999 banjo. It will have the Hartford name in mother of pearl on the fingerboard; that was changed to abalone when John died in 2001. It has not changed much over time. I imagine he has the wooden tone ring? We now use a different species of maple for the foundational rim but all else is the same.
