Made in the U.S.A., this solid brass mute fits 4, 5, and 6 string banjos. Adjustable for all bridge widths, this mute does not hinder right hand position. Easy on and off.

You just slide the mute on the bridge lengthwise because one end is open.  The sound is much quieter, but still a very pleasant sound, this will help keep peace in the home when the baby is sleeping.

Not happy with your banjo

"Not happy with your banjo mute. It keeps dropping down as I play on the banjo and not nearly as quiet as I exprd."

— Ronald S. (2/5)

Deering Banjo Mute

"The Deering Banjo Mute really fits perfectly and softens my Deering banjo guitar. I use guitar picks and find that I can do more with the instrument if it is not as bright and not as loud. I call it a "Works Donut. ""

— Colleen F. (5/5)

Very effective

"Works exactly as needed. Great item, highly recommended"

— Lindsay S. (5/5)

Works well

"Is the black inner liner supposed to be sticky? I assumed it would be a nice felt or something. Still, it works nicely, and i think actually improves the tone of my banjo uke."

— James C. (4/5)

Get the other one.

"It basically requires modifying to work properly."

— Ryan M. (2/5)

I have an open back

"I have an open back banjo. Towel stuffed in the back works just as good without destroying the sound."

— Jim C. (3/5)

Make your family happy :-)

"Works great. Banjo still has a pleasing sound but much quieter. My family approves :-)"

— Sean M. (5/5)

great banjo mute

"I can play banjo without disturbing others in house. Would recommend to everyone that wants to play at odd times."

— william e. (5/5)

Quality product but may not fit all models

"The banjo mute is well designed and uses quality materials, but it didn't fit the bridge of my six-string banjo, even after pinching the sides together. I'm returning it. My instrument may be idiosyncratic, though, so the mute may work for other models."

— Charles K. (3/5)

Q&A

Will the Deering mute fit my D-12?
If you have one of our newer D-12 banjos with the thinner bridge, you should have no problem using the mute. It merely slips under the strings and around the bridge. In the past, our bridges for the 6-string banjos were thicker. If you have one of those, this mute may not be able to fit around it. Thanks for asking.
How does this thing work? Can someone post a video?
It slips around the bridge and under the strings. The picture on the website is accurate. Just put the bridge between the two "fingers of the mute and slide it around the bridge/under the strings.
Hi. Do you have a video/audio piece demonstrating difference with and without the banjo bridge mute? Would be interesting to see how different it is than a towel.
No...but with the mute is sounds like a little music box.
Are pre-06 tone rings and 06 tone rings interchangeable? Would there be any noticeable sound advantage in doing so on a Maple Blossom ~Tenor banjo? What is the cost of an 06 tone ring?
No...the rims are cut differently. The new rim will make your banjo sound fuller.
To install the the mute do you have to loosen the strings and then tune them and then do the same in reverse when you remove the mute?
No, you just slip it UNDER the strings and around the bridge. :-) No detuning needed.
