This is the most popular head made for a 5-string banjo. It is crisp, bright with good snap, not too much sustain, good clarity and note distinction.

Standard Deering head diameter: 11"

*Note* 12" Heads are specialty heads for our larger 12" Jumbo diameter banjos*

*Note* Vintage Vega Banjos may have custom head dimensions that are not available direct from Deering*

"I’ve never ever have a problem with Deering so professional, polite and you guys follow up on everything. You just don’t find a company or people that are consistently great!! You guys got the sauce!! So keep up the great work you guys do. Ps the banjo players you have are pretty good too lol 😂 actually I wish I could play like that!! Awesome!!"

New head for 2003 GDL

"I purchased a banjo head to replace one on my 2003 GDL. It sounds great and the support I received as I worked through replacing it was wonderful."

banjo head, frosted

"It had one slight edge chip missing on white frosted finish. I am unable to use it however because the tone ring (did I get that right?) on the no-name banjo I am repairing for brother-in-law is a little too big diameter. It's a welded and chromed ring and I couldn't modify without major (?) damage. I will be reusing the old head. Your YouTube videos are VERY helpful."

Mostly good

"It’s usually trouble free to order whatever I need from here, and my order for a replacement head was taken care of promptly and courteously. Unfortunately, I needed some other parts which they don’t have in stock and have no clue when they will be in stock. That’s a bit aggravating."

Replacement Banjo Head

"I needed to replace the head on my Deering Maple Blossom banjo (the original head had ripped), and I wanted a genuine Deering part. Ordering was easy, the cost competitive, the part shipped right away, and I had the new banjo head installed the day after I got the replacement. The replacement head looks, feels, and sounds great."

Q&A

Is the specialized Julia Belle head available from Deering?
Hi Gary, Thank you for your interest in the head we use on the Julia Belle. This banjo head is not available for individual sale.
I have a 1986 Deluxe. Based on the answers to previous questions, I will need a high crown head. Is this correct? Thanks!
Yes...you will need a high crown head...thanks for checking.
Hello, I have 2 Deering banjos, one is a Vega Senator (Serial Number 120398IOPI16) and the other is a Sierra (Serial Number: 01499609M787) and I'm interested on changing the heads but I have doubts about the crown heigth that I need (high,medium???.....). Can you help me about it?
The Vega is a December of 2010 and the Sierra is a January of 2009; both will use a medium crown head.
Hello, I have a banjo 5 strings "eagle 2" I wanted to change the skin but I could not put the 11 "apparently the original skin made less than 11"?
The Eagle II from Deering does use a medium crown, 11" diameter head. Did you order if from us?
What size is a 2011 deluxe head crown? High or medium?
Medium crown. thanks for checking.
I have to change my 2013 Calico's head. Please tell me what crown high I have to select ? High or medium ? Many thanks in advance. PS : I would appreciate equivalence between inches and metrical measure system (centimeters). I am French (sorry for that !).
You need a medium crown head. Sorry...I don't have that conversion rate for you but you should be able to find it online. A medium crown head is 7/16" and a high crown head is 1/2".
I own a Maple Blossom banjo, how do you determine crown size?
If it has the Deering -06- tone ring then it takes a medium crown head.
Will this head fit a 60's model vega ranger 5, 5 string banjo. It has the original vegalite weatherproof head thanks chad
Measure your banjo head; ours are 11" diameter; high/medium crown only.
Will this fit a 60,s model vega ranger 5
The Ranger is a vintage Vega. You would have to check the diameter of your existing head as we only carry the 11" diameter in high (1/2") or medium (7/16") crown height.
I have a Calico and Golden Era..are the recommended heads for these "High Crown"?I want to keep a popping bluegrass tone.
Depends on the age...if 2006 or newer; use medium crown. If older, use high crown.
Which head should I order to replace the head on my deering classic open back 5 string banjo? My original is fine, but I'm in Alaska and if I break the original I'd like my down time to be as short as possible.
You need a high crown head.
I have a Vega 5-string LONG NECK banjo. I believe the head size is 11" diameter, but I need to know if the collar should be Hi, Medium, or Low so I can order the right one
You have to measure the one you have on it...high crown is 1/2" and the medium is 7/16". You measure from the top of the aluminum edge of the banjo head to the top flat surface of your head.
Does the Vega long neck 5 string banjo use a high, medium, or low crown 11" head?
The Deering Vega banjo made 2006 or newer uses a medium crown; the older ones use a high crown.
What crown height do I need for my Calico? I bought the instrument from Jim's House of Guitars in San Diego sometime in September, 1981. The serial number is 0902881, dated 9/18/81. The head has been punctured somehow.
You need a high crown head.
